Mahmud Ghori

Caption: Prithviraj Chauhan, the last Hindu ruler of Delhi, defeats the Muslim invader Mahmud Ghori at the 1st Battle of Tarain in 1191. Prithviraj released the vanquished Ghori, but Ghori repaid Prithviraj's kindness by attacking him again and defeating him the next time. Ghori blinded the captured Prithviraj for refusing to lower his eyes when presented as a prisioner before Ghori. This episode is a seminal one which marks the end of Hindu independence and the beginning of Muslim occupation of India which lasted for 700 years, till 1857 C.E. Refer to page for more details.
