PREFACE TO REVISED EDITION OF
KURAL |
|
This is a
thoroughly revised fourth edition of my book of selections from Tiru-Valluvar's great
book. A high degree of civilization in the truest sense of the word is disclosed by
Kural which was written more then 1500 years ago. Without such civilization
Tiru-Valluvar's book could not have come into being. Kural is not a mere book of
aphorisms. It is a work linked with the life of the people in all its aspects. This
book of giving English renderings of selected couplets, it is hoped, will help the
non-Tamil people of India to appraise the Tamil civilization of Tiru-Valluvar's time in
proper measure. The couplets are not printed with the
feet divided according to Tamil prosody but so as to facilitate readers following the
meaning easily.
