Andal Page1

You have read about the Alwars in earlier books. They were Vaishnavite saints of Tamil Nadu. Among them, Andal occupies a pre-eminent place. The Andal means "saviour" and she was a woman saint.

In a small town called Srivilliputtur in Tamil Nadu there lived a pious Vaishnava Brahmin of the name Vishnuchitta. He had dedicated himself to the worship of the Lord of the local temple.

He had read that Lord Vishnu dearly loved the tulsi plant and for that reason he took it as his life's mission to worship the Lord with tulsi leaves. He reared a large flower garden in which be grew tulsi plants. He tended them with great care and worshipped the Lord with the tulsi grown there.
