For more than four hundred years India was ruled by foreigners.
In 1526 the Mughals invaded India and brought almost the whole of our country under their
rule.
The British came to India as traders of the East India Company. After the death of the
Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb, they grabbed the country bit by bit and in 1857, Queen
Victoria, the monarch of Britain, became Empress of India.
Educated Indians became discontented with the British rule. Some Englishmen therefore
wanted to bring about an understanding between the Government and the people.
Among them was one Allan Octavian Hume. He was an ICS official who had retired. He started
an association called the Indian National Union with educated Indian students as its members.
Through that association he called a conference of Indian leaders for discussing the problems of the day.
