"Why do you detract from the joys of life by such statements?", asks
the fool in his simplicity: "look at the kinsmen round me", says he, "Oh!
how much they love me and make me happy! Is all this false or is it a dream? Look at my
wife and her love of me; will not that alone compensate for all the pains of life?
Ignoring all this, why do you revile at everything calling it all mere folly?
In answer, Sri Sankara says:
As long as you are able to earn, so long
will your kinsfolk be attached to you. After that, when your body has become infirm, noi
one will speak to you even in your own home.
