Introduction
The district of Midnapore has a very high place for her contribution
to the past history and cultures of Bengal and as such plays a significant role for the
future. The physiographical location of the district is on the boarders of Orissa and
Bihar and the district has great affinities with the
districts of Chotanagpur and Santal Parganas in Bihar. Midnapore district has probably not
yet been subjected to a severe archaeological x-ray but from time to time relics have been
found which show that the district has a great antiquity.
Some stone implements have been found in Midnapore
district, which are similar to the specimens that have earlier been discovered in
Singhbhum and the old Manbhum district now distributed over Purulia district in Bengal and
Dhanbad district in Bihar.
