The year 1942
is an important one in the history of India.
In that year Mahatma Gandhi, through the Quit India movement, made a supreme effort to
liberate our country from British rule.
Several factors were in our favour.
Great Britain was fighting a losing war on two fronts.
In Europe it was defending its country against Hitler.
In the east, Japan had been capturing her possessions like Burma. It had even bombed our
eastern ports like Vizagapatnam. it, Indians fleeing from Burma told stories of the
atrocities of the Japanese.
From the way Japan was
advancing, it was feared that she would capture India too and it was generally felt that
the British, after destroying our country, would leave it to the mercy of the invader.
