Introduction
There are two very famous temples in Madras City, viz., Kapaleeswarar temple of Mylapore dedicated to Lord Siva, and Parthasarathy temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Parthasarathy temple is situated on the place Mythologically called Vrindaranya. It is said that for at least 5,000 years Sri Parthasarathy temple has been a resting place for pilgrims who come down from Tirupati to have a bath in the sea on the days of Solar and Lunar Eclipses and on other uspicious days.
According to Brahmanda Purana, the 5 deities in the temple of Parthasarathy are said to have been worshipped by the Sapta Rishis, Bhrigu, Marichi, Atri, Markandeya, Sumati, Saptorama and Jali and they have been sung upon by two of the earliest Alwars, Pey Alwar and Tirumazhisai Alwar, and later on by Tirumangai Alwar (476 A.D.) who is considered to be the last of the Alwars.
