Prabhasa
was a traditionally sacred place even in the days of Dharmaraj, the son of pandu. The
Mahabharata refers to it again and again.1 It was well known as a holy place situated as
it was-where the river Sarasvati flowed into the sea. It was also connected with Soma, the
Moon God. Daksha had twenty-seven daughters, corresponding to twenty-seven
constellations, all married to Soma. Rohini, however, was the most beautiful of them, and
Soma continued to live with her. His other wives naturally complained to Daksha, who
somehow induced him to be fair with them.
