Manikka
Vachakar was a great saint of Tamil Nadu. He was also a poet. He was an ardent devotee of
God Siva. His earlier name was Vaaclavoorar. He sang many poems in Tamil in praise of God.
They are collected in the famous book, Tiruxacita- kant. Once God came down
to make a copy of it for him!
He lived over a
thousand years ago. He was a minister to the Pandyan king, Arimardana. This king ruled in
Madurai.
One day the king gave him plenty ofmoney and said, "Go
and buy the finest horses you can find anywhere in any of the cities for the royal
stables." The minister took the money and went.
On the way, he assed through a village. There Vaadavoorar
saw a learned Pandit seated in the shade of a tree, teaching his pupils truths about Cod.
He listened to the teaching from a distance.
