Temples And Legends of Himachal Pradesh Introduction

Banasur was a mighty Rakshasha who ruled very sternly over the area known in the ancient days as Malana in Kulu complex. To his land came Maharishi Jamadagni with his wife Renuka. Jamadagni liked the sylvan surroundings and wanted to set up his hermitage here. Banasur the wicked Rakshash had been oppressing the people a lot.

Banasur took great offence at the daring of Jamadagni and made up his mind to destroy him. He did not know that Jamadagni was a very learned man and had done years of tapashya. Banasur caught hold of Jamadagni and put him in a huge cauldron full of oil and put the cauldron on fire and closed its lids. Days after Banasur took off the lid and found the Rishi alive and deep in meditation.
