Introduction

Barpeta, a town in Kamrup district, is about sixty miles from Gauhati.Direct bus connection exists between Barpeta and Gauhati. Barpeta is just some twelve miles from the railway station called Barpeta Road on the Gauhati-Lucknow and Gauhati -Barauni main railway line of the Northeast Frontier Railway. 'Madhavadeva established the Barpeta Satra. It contains all the Satra complexes described before. Walls on all the four sides enclose the Satra. Within the compound and to the left of the main entrance, there is the house of the Satradhikar and next to it are seen a number of small dwellings intended for the. Kevaliya Bhaktas. At the time of Madhavadeva there were as many as one hundred and twenty Bhaktas living, in those' dwellings.
