The fourth and fifth and the first half of the sixth century form a great landmark in the history of
India.
They are known as the Classical or the Golden Age of India. This Age is also called the
Periclean Age of India because of the uniqueness of its character in many ways.
The Guptas ruled during those years.
Chandragupta,
the founder of the dynasty, rose to be an emperor from a petty chieftain. What he started
building, his descendants completed and the empire which the Guptas had built
comprised almost the whole of north India extending from the Bay of Bengal to the
Arabian sea, which was bigger than any empire in the past since very ancient times.
