Introduction
Majuli, an island in the river Brahmaputra, one of the biggest river islands of the world, is a famous centre of the religion of the Vaishnavas.It became the head - quarters and the chief seat of the Satras founded by Brahnnanas from the time of Rudra Singh (1696-1714 A. D.), the greatest of all the great Ahom rulers.
Majuli is situated in the neighborhood of Jorhat, in Sibsagar district. Jorhat can be reached from Gauhati either by bus or by train or by air. From Jorhat one has to travel ten miles by bus to Naimati, a river ghat, from where the ferries take the visitors to Kamalabari, also a ghat on the Majuh Island. Conveyances are available at this place which
can be made use of by the pilgrims to visit the Satras.
