The Pandavas had made their home in a forest.
One day Rishi Vyasa came to them. He said to Arjuna: "Go to the Himalayas. Do tapas,and get awe-inspiring weapons from the Gods. Then you will be able to defeat your enemies easily."
Arjuna took leave of his brothers, mother Kunti and wife Draupadi, and went to the Himalayas.
At the foot of the great mountains, Indra, the King of Gods met him.
He asked Arjuna: "What can a warrior be doing here? People come here for doing tapas!"
Arjuna replied: "Lord, please give me some mighty weapons of war!"
Indra said: "If you want such weapons, you must do penance, and seek Siva's grace."
Arjuna said: "I will as you say, " and went up the mountain.
There he chose a quiet place. He prayed fervently to God Siva.
