Socrates Page1

There is a country in Europe called Greece. It is a far away from Bharat.

Athens is its capital.

Long, long ago, there lived in that city a man called Socrates.

He was the son of a sculptor. Like his father he also made images in stone. His mother was a kind-hearted woman. She has what we today call a nurse.

Socrates was a very good man. He would say that the only thing he knew was that he knew nothing. But he always tried to find out the truth about things. He encouraged everyone to ask questions, and thus got at the truth.

He taught 'people to love truth and justice and practise virtue.

Many disciples studied under hisguidance.

Socrates had a strong body, but an ugly face. His nose was flat and his lips thick. His eyes were large. His beard was thick. He never put on shoes. He dressed shabbily.
