From
the foregoing account it is clear that the temple was more or less neglected after the
first quarter of the 18th century and was fast falling into ruins. The salt laden damp sea
breeze had joined to bring about an early decadence of the body fabric. It was not until
the arrival of Lord Curzon that effective steps for the preservation of the monument were
taken. On his initiative, a compound-wall was constructed and the enclosed area around the
temple was levelled up. In the temple itself, at various places underpinned masonry was
inserted to save the superstructure from falling.
