How can a man adopt the way of compassion, gorging on the flesh of other
beings in order to fatten his own flesh? Meat eating is inconsistent with tenderness to
life or compassion. Nature cannot work a contrary whatever be the casuistry about
it. If we must eat meat, let us not talk of compassion.
The butcher with the knife in his hand cannot turn his heart to
compassion. It is just the same with one whom has trained his mind to find pleasure in the eating of the body of another creature made tasty with condiments.
