Tamil classics lay very great emphasis on education. It is
indeed often considered as important as the moral virtues.
Uneducated men are like alkaline
soil. Their existence is worthless and nominal:
Even if an unlettered man displays
great good sense, it will not be recognized by the learned:
This is not a remark against learned
men but is intended to insist on the importance of education.
An unlettered man's conceit will find
its end when the occasion for speech arrives:
The size and personality of a man who
is externally grand but has not an intellect improved by learning is
like the grandeur of large clay images made beautiful with coloured
paste:
