The Vedas are
the earliest literature of India. They are over five thousand years old.
We find in the Vedas the beginnings of mathematics in India.
Our Vedic rishis knew many branches of mathematics like arithmetic, geometry, algebra and
astronomy.
The rishis of the Vedic times had to perform yagas. These were done on a platform or Vedi
which was a rectangle, circle, a half-circle, etc. They had framed rules for drawing these
figures. These rules were called sulba-sutras. Rishi Baudhayana wrote the best and biggest
of them.
There are even rules for converting one
geometrical figure into another, like a circle into a square.
The science of calculation was called ganita; algbera, bija
ganita and geometry, kshetra ganita.
