For a long time King Aswapati of Madra had no children. He worshipped
Goddess Savitri with great devotion. By the blessings of that Goddess, a female child was
at last born to him. He named her Savitri.
Savitri was lovely to look at. She soon learnt all the Sastras that
highborn girls should know.
When she reached her maidenhood, her father said to her one day:
"Child, I cannot think of any husband suitable for a girl like you.So will you select
your own husband?"
Savitri drove to the forest in a chariot to get the blessings of the rishis. She
came tothe ashrama of Dyumatsena.
Dyumatsena was the king of Salva. His enemies had attacked him and
driven him away from his country. So he lived in the forest like a rishi with his wife and
son, Satyavan.
Dyumatsena had become blind.
