Dasharatha was King
of Kosala. Ayodhya was its capital. Dasharatha had three Queens: Kausalya, Sumitra and
Kaikeyi.
For a long time they had no children.
Dasharatha did a Yaga. An angel came. He gave the King a golden pot. It was filled with
Payasa.
The angel said, "Give this Payasa to your queens, and you will get children."
The King gave the Payasa to his queens. They drank it. Later, four sons were born to them
– Rama to Kausalya, Bharata to Kaikeyi, and Lakshmana and Satrughna to Sumitra.
