The fourth and fifth and the first half of the sixth century form a great landmark in the history of
India.
They are known as the Classical or the Golden Age of India. This Age is also called the
Periclean Age of India because� of the uniqueness of its character in many ways.
The Guptas ruled during those years.
Chandragupta,
the founder of the dynasty, rose to be an emperor from a petty chieftain. What he started
building, his� descendants completed and the empire which the Guptas had built
comprised almost the whole of north India extending from� the Bay of Bengal to the
Arabian sea, which was bigger than any empire in the past since very ancient times.
