After briefly referring to ruining oneself by going in quest of sexual enjoyment, Sri Sankara speaks about the craving to acquire wealth. This verse should be read keeping in mind what Sri Sankara said in the second verse. There it was said: "Live by what you have earned by your own labour; you will be happy. Eschew the greed for more and more wealth. You cannot be Happy that way. The thirst for wealth is a thirst which can never be quenched."
That stanza was:
Once again, Sri Sankara warns us about the greed for wealth. Wealth makes for your undoing. Reflect on this always. Verily I say there is not the slightest happiness at the end of the pursuit of wealth. The wealthy come to fear even their sons. This is what has happened again and again everywhere.
