WHEN Jesus
Christ was thirty years old, he became a famous preacher.
He spoke of God to people in his native land around the Lake of Galilee, in Pale-
stine.
By the time he was thirty-three years old, people knew that
he was a Messiah or the Messenger of God, come to earth to teach man the way of God-life.
Jerusalem was the capital. A Roman Governor ruled over the
territory. There was a holy temple in Jerusalem. Jesus went to the temple one day. A huge
crowd followed him. People cheered him all the way, and welcomed him as the Son of God
come to save them.
The head priest of the temple was called Caiaphas. He
thought the Messiah would be a warrior, or a leading citizen and a rich man. But when he
saw that Jesus was the son of a carpenter, and his followers were all poor, he was
disappointed.
