Abhimanyu was Arjuna's son and Parikshit was Abhimanyu's son. So Parikshit was Arjuna's grandson.
The word Parikshit means one who looks around or examines.
During the Mahabharata war, Acharya Drona had been killed. His son Aswatthama wanted to avenge his father's death by erasing the Pandava clan by killing all the Pandava children.
Accordingly, he killed all the five sons of the Panchali while they were asleep.
Abhimanyu had already been killed inside the Chakravyuha by the combined might of Maharathis like Drona, Karna, Jayadratha and others.
