The Bhagavad Gita is a sacred and popular book of philosophical poems.
Just as Christians take the oath on the Bible in a Court of Justice, Hindus take the oath
on the Bhagavad Gita or the Gita for short.
The word Bhagavad Gita means the songs of the Lord.
This book forms part of the Mahabharata written by Vyasa.
The Gita has 18 chapters covering nearly 700 verses. Of course, all these verses are in
Sanskrit.
The main part of the book is in the form of a dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna on the
battlefield of Kurukshetra where the Pandavas were ranged against the Kauravas in
war.
The Gita, the Upanishads and the Brahma-Sutras of Vyasa are together called Prasthana
Trayi, or the three basic books of Indian philosophy.
