Kali Dasa is one of India’s greatest poets.

His most famous play is Saakuntalam.

He wrote many other plays’ and poems, too. All of them are in Sanskrit.

He lived many years ago. He was the court -poet of King Vikramaditya who ruled at Ujjain. He was one of the "nine gems" of Vikramaditya’s court.

Do you know how Kali Dasa became agreat poet?

He was an ignorant shepherd. He never went to school. He tended sheep in a village.

In the nearby city was a king who had a daughter. Vidyavati was her name." She was very learned. She said, "’Whoever answers my questions on sastras only can marry me. "
