Dr.C.Rajagopalachari Page1

After uttering a warning in the first three stanzas against the arrogance of knowledge, the lure of wealth and of sex, Sri Sankara speaks of the nature of life in the fourth stanza. A lotus leaf Boats on water. A water drop rests on it credulously feeling quite safe as it dances on the lotus leaf. Sri Sankara says that the joys of life are as unstable as such a water drop. Man's mind skips here and there even as the water drop dances on the lotus leaf. Unceasing desire is its nature. Afflicted by disease and tossed about by attachments, human life is enveloped by grief.
