Agastya was a
great rishi. He was short of stature.
His tapas,
however, had power which no man could equal.
Lopamudra was his wife. She was a princess. Yet she married
him because of his tapai.
When God Siva married Parvati at Kailasa, all men and women
went to Kailasa in the north to attend the marriage.
Therefore, the weight on Kailasa became so heavy that the
earth here appeared to sink while its other end seemed to tilt upward.
Siva at once sent Agastya to the south to balance the
weight. Agastya was sostrong!
Again Sanskrit means mountain. The word Agastya means he
who balanced the Kailasa mountain with his weight.
