Long ago, there
lived a merchant named Sur. He was a Jain. His guru said to him one day: "Sur, you
must do Mauna-vrata for one day on the 11th day of the bright half of Margashirsh
every year."
On Mauna-vrata day we should not speak at all,but keep complete
silence all through the day and night. It will give peace to the mind and strength to the
body.
Sur observed this Vrata for eleven years.
He became a very rich merchant in his subsequent birth. He was called Suvrat in this,
his next life. He had many children. The king of his country honoured him.
One day a Sadhu came to Suvrat and told him about Mauna Ekadasi.
Suvrat at once remembered his past life. He also remembered his Mauna-vrata. So
he continued the Mauna-Ekadasi-vrata in his present life as well.
One Mauna-Ekadasi day, Suvrat was observing the Vrara as
usual.
At night a thief broke into his house and stole many valuables.
