Very long ago, there was a Brahmin called Kausika.

Once he became so ill that he could not walk.

His wife Sandili was a very dutiful woman.

One night she carried him on her back to another village.

On the way she had to cross a forest. In that forest, a rishi, Mandavya by name, was doing tapas.

It was dark. So Sandili could not see the rishi.

Unfortunately, her husband's leg struck him, as she passed.

The rishi became very angry. He cursed Kausika: "Your leg hit me, so you shall die before sun-rise!
