Alampur
is said to be the western gate of Srisailam,which is one of the mostb impor- tant of the
12 Jyotirlinga in India. Bala Brahmeswara is the presiding deity here. It is stated that Brahma performed a great penance at this place
for thousands of years, and pleased Lord Siva who con- ferred the powers of creation on
him.
Hence the deity is called Brahmeswara. The goddess is
called Yogini or Jogul- amba, which is a synonym for Parvathi.
There are several other holy places round about the
Brahmeswara temple. The following are the most important of these: -
1) Papavinasana Tirtha: This is a spot in Tungabhadra
about half a mile up the river from the Brahmeswara temple. There is a temple of
Papanaseswara at this place.
The sanctity of this place is so great that popular
belief is that those who bathe here once will attain the same virtue, which Can be
acquired by bathing in the Ganges for one year. Bathing at this sacred place will purify
any kind of sin.
2) Ganika Siddhesswara temple: This is a place in
Tungabhadra where the Gandh- arva and Siddhas bathe and worship Lord Siva. It is stated
that those who have their sacred bath here will inevitably succeed in all their
achievements.
3) Raja Rajeswara Tirtha: This is a spot where Kubera
performed penance and pleased Lord Siva. |
