Abhishekam is done to Azhagar with water brought from there. If the idol is bathed in water brought from any other Teertham, it immediately becomes black.

The Sthala Vriksham is the peepal tree. There are valuable ornaments and jewels worth 2 to 3 lakhs rupees. There are many
Vahanams made of jewels, gold, silver and ivory. Many festivals take place in this temple, of which Chitra Pournami festival is very important and is celebrated simultaneously with a similar festival in the Meenakshi Temple at Madurai.  This festival lasts for nine days. On the fourth day Azhagar is taken to Madurai where he attends his sister Meenakshi's marriage. This is a very joyous occasion for the people at both Azhagarmalai and Madurai. Lakhs of people come from surrounding towns and villages to witness the festival.
