There are many
Teerthams called Hanuman, Garuda, Pandava, Uttara Narayana, etc. There is a Mandapam,
called Madhavi Mandapam. Inside, which is, located a Teertham known as Noopura Ganga.
Abhishekam is done to Azhagar with water brought from there. If the idol is bathed in
water brought from any other Teertham, it immediately becomes black. The Sthala Vriksham is the peepal tree. There are valuable
ornaments and jewels worth 2 to 3 lakhs rupees. There are many
Vahanams made of jewels, gold, silver and ivory. Many
festivals take place in this temple, of which Chitra Pournami festival is very important
and is celebrated simultaneously with a similar festival in the Meenakshi Temple at
Madurai. This festival lasts for nine days. On the fourth day Azhagar is taken to
Madurai where he attends his sister Meenakshi's marriage. This is a very joyous occasion
for the people at both Azhagarmalai and Madurai. Lakhs of people come from surrounding
towns and villages to witness the festival. |
