At Madurai,
the figure of Nataraja is plated with silver and is one of the finest specimens of its
kind in South India. Out. of the seven postures of the celestical dance of Siva, the dance
performed at Madurai is the Ananda Tandavam, i.e., the Dance of Joy, and the one performed
at Chidambaram, is called Nadanta Tandavam. This
change of position of the leg from left to right have been made by Lord Siva to satisfy
the desire of King Rajasekhara Pandya of Madurai. The legend goes to say that Rajasekhara
Pandya was well versed in 63 out of the 64 branches of knowledge. Karikala Chola of the
Chola dynasty was well versed in the 64th, i.e., the art of dancing.
