YAJNAVALKYA AND MAITREYI |
|
YOU have read
in an earlier book the story of Rishi Yajnavalkya.
As you know, the rishi had two wives: Maitreyi and Katyayani. The former were learned in
the Sastras and she was a seeker after Self-knowledge or the Atman. Katyayani, on the
other hand, was an ordinary housewife doing the household chores.
One day the rishi called Maitreyi and said: "My dear, I have decided to renounce life
and become a sanyasi. Before I do so, I want to make a settlement of my properties between
you and Katyayani."
Maitreyi said, "I understand your anxiety; but Lord, will that wealth or, for that
matter, the wealth of the entire world given to me, give me Atma-gnana or
Self-knowledge?" |
