This perpetual
enemy of the wise, this unquenchable and insatiable foe, Desire, surrounds and holds the
understanding as prisoner. III-39
It is said that this enemy seizing the senses, the mind and
Reason and thus closely surrounding and isolating the understanding, uses them to bewilder
the soul

thing, which otherwise will destroy knowledge and diserimination.

There are three gateways to hell, by which one's self-ruin
is brought about-lust, anger and greed; therefore let these three be renounced.
