RENOUNCING OF DESIRE

If the desire to attain the Real is truly strong, the dropping of any form of worldly desire becomes easy.

It is only those who along with the thing given up have given up the desire for it that can be said to have renounced. Those who have not done this have not truly renounced.

Mere external giving up is not enough. The emphasis on tile renunciation of desire was very relevant in the days of Tiru-Valluvar when large numbers took up celibacy and sanyas. Compare Gita 11-59.

Desire is the greatest deceiver. Dread and guard against it. This vigilance is the whole of the moral code.

It the pain of pains called Desire is kept out, one can even in this life attain unbroken happiness.
