TRUTHFULNESS |
|
To some, the causing of pain to others is the great wrong and everything
should be adjudged good or bad or this basic test; to others, truth is an absolute duty
and a breach of that duty is by itself wrong and need not be related to the causing of
pain to others. It is perhaps easier to speak the truth than to avoid the causing of harm
to others. The latter is a severer test than literal accuracy.
Those who explain the duty of truth
on the basis of avoidance of pain to others are however not to be under stood to allow
laxity. The following verse will remove any doubt. Of all things confirmed in our
experience, the rule of truthfulness stands out most firmly established. There is nothing
more precious than truth. |
