Adi
Sankara, the great religious reformer who re-established the Shanmatas in this land, has
specifically sung about Sri Kannappa Nayanars in his famous mystic poem Sivananda Lahiri. The Temple was built the temple at the foot of Kailasagiri. Kings and
later by Tondaman Chakravarti. The Chola kings renovated and built the main temple.
Kulottunga Chola, the great Chola king, superintended the Galigopuram. Which is the main
entrance facing south, in the Eleventh Century A.D. In the Twelfth Century A.D., King
Veeranarasimha Yadavaraya built the present outer Prakaras, and the four Gopurams
connecting the four entrances of the temple.
