The Kaifiat
collected by Col. Mackenzie and also the other epigraphically details of the temple
furnish us with a history of the place. It’s stated that the Swayambu Linga, in
course of time got obscured, and was covered by anthills, and was thus lost to the
devotees. It was then discovered only by means of a cow, which used to come every day to
the spot, and give its milk as an offering to the Lord. The Kaifiat records that with the
royal patronage of the Vijayanagar king, Sri Ramalinga Naidu built the western, northern
and southern gopurams of the temple and also the Mahadwara gopurams on the south. To the
east of the temple at the spot where Lord Parashurama is said to have done his penance,
there is a temple installed with the idol of Sri Rama and this is known as Rama Padam. |
