PREFACE

The Rasa Mancha temple at Bistupur, Siva temple at Ekteshwar, Malleshwar Siva temple at Bistupur, the heavily ornamented temple at Bahulara. reminding one of the temples at Bhuvaneswar is absolutely of different types. As mentioned earlier the aim of this book is only to introduce the reader to the temples and legends in Bengal particularly at a time when many of the temples are in a decadent condition and there has been a regular pilferage of the finely executed images. I am grateful to the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for giving me the privilege to do the book.

Particular mention has to be made of the help that I have received from Professor Nirmal Kumar Bose, Ex-Director of Anthropological Survey of India. He has very kindly helped me arranging a number of photos for this book. Professor Bose has made valuable contribution in various spheres in art and architecture of the temples in Bengal and Orissa.
