Accordingly
preparations for the pratishta began. The auspicious day and time arrived. But there was
no sign of the peacock anywhere. The people were Puzzled and stood looking skyward.
Presently a devotee holding a bunch of peacock feathers appeared on the scene. Taking it
for the peacock itself, the pratishta was performed immediately.
Later on, it is said, the bird did appear as predicted and below that spot the balikkal or
altar was installed. Because of this, the balikkal is said to have the same importance as
the deity itself. |
