INTRODUCTORY TO EXCAVATIONS

Strangely enough, no present able or precise records were maintained for all these soundings which numbered no fewer than twenty. Dr. N. P. Chakravarty, the then Director-General of Archaeology in India, disapproved of these excavations which subsequently were discontinued. In the third meeting in July 1950, Shri M. S. Vats, the present Director General, while reiterating the necessity for a careful and well-stratified excavation, also laid down that "detailed Photographs, plans and elevations of the sides from inside and out and all the ceilings should be prepared and wherever excavations are made... the points should be carefully recorded both by drawings and by photographs."
