THE
RATHAS
It is said that it was Mahendra Varman (600-630 A.D.) who introduced in the South the cave
style of temple architecture In Mahabalipuram we can find a group of boulder formations on
the seashore, out of which numerous cave temples, sculptures and monolithic temples have
been carved out. These monolithic temples or Rathas
are known as the "Seven Pagodas", though now only five exist. These Rathas are
named after the five Pandava. Brothers and their wife Draupadi. These are not really
chariots or cars nor have they anything to do with the heroes of the Mahabharata. They are
simply temple intended for the worship of Siva, Durga and some other unknown deities.
