The holy ablution
to the deity at Totadri is done with pure gingelly oil. By contact with the holy idol the
oil is impregnated with
miraculous curative powers. The oil is collected in a pool 20 feet by 10 feet near the
temple enclosures. It is said that the healing power of the oil is so great and so
mysterious as to cure even the deadliest disease like leprosy. When I visited the temple, accumulation of gingelly oil in the pool was
four feet in depth. It is well protected under lock and key and is under the open sky. It
is distributed to the needy on particular occasions. This is the only place in the South
where gingelly oil used in ablutions, is preserved for distribution. On some
occasions as much as 112 measures equivalent to 150 kilo grams are offered as a holy
ablution to the deities for fulfillment of some vow. A very interesting mythological story
may be alluded to in this connection. |
