TIRUVANMIYUR |
|
Since the linga was
daily bathed by Kamadhenu's milk, the name of the Lord came to be known as Palvannar (in
Tamil Pal means milk and Vannar means god of its color). King Sadayur, hearing of the
mystery behind the cow, settled down at Tiruvanmiyur and built a temple for Palvannar.
Mere is another legend referring to the importance of Tiruvanmiyur as an important Saivite
centre. The great Valmiki who composed the Ramayana was counseled by Sage Markandeya while
listening to the devotional verses of the Ramayana that Siva worship and the darsan of
Lord Siva are necessary to attain moksha. Sage Markandeya bade Valmiki go round the world
and advised him that the place where he heard a voice saying 'I am here' was the most
fitting one to offer worship to Lord Siva. |
