TIRUVANNAMALAI |
|
Brahma took the
form of a swan and flew up to find the upper end of the column and Vishnu took the form of
a boar and
dived down to find the bottom. As they failed in their mission, they came back and prayed
to the Jyoti to take a concrete form.
Being pleased with their prayer, Lord Siva took the form of a Sthavara linga, i.e.,
Arunachala, Hill, This is origin of the Hill.
It is said that in Krita Yuga the linga was in the form of a flame (Jyoti) and in Treta
Yuga it became a hill of Jewels; in Dwapara Yuga it appeared like a hill of Gold and in
Kali Yuga it appears like a hill of Marakata. At present the color of the hill is reddish
like copper. |
