ASOKA AS A MONARCH

Did not the scriptures enjoin the Kings to undertake Digvijaya Yatra? Wherefore the skills of warfare acquired, then? Who could put down the wicked and uphold 'dharma'? What for is the soldiering insisted upon? And glorified? Why should the timid be despised and valiant adored? Questions of this type again and again assailed him all-round and upset his well formed or ill formed decisions, non-stop. He grew restless.

He summoned forthwith his valorous warriors and segacious ministers for solution. He tabled the motion and initiated the discussion. Every voice was given a chance - opinions were sought for; consultations, went on; strength, estimated; pros and cons, considered; the time of action, discussed; mode of attack, chalked out and strategy, planned. All ended declaration of war against Kalinga.

The poor, Iuckless helpless, spineless Kalinga thus became a target of his wrath and attack. What a pity! How miserable were the Kalingas!! What doom awaits that unfortunate Kingdom!!!

Soon the war drums were sounded, weapons sharpened, army inspired, leaders roared and chariots fitted out. And the whole army started moving towards Kalinga.

It looked like a great city on wheels!
