MODERN

The
impact of West is no where more glaringly discernable as in the families of
orthodox Hindus, and particularly among the high caste working class. Though
centuries went by, the old are still like pendulams, leading a restless life;
and a few like tortoises, fearing to be x-rayed are withdrawing their heads
into shells, now and then, but hate joining the vanguard along with their progeny, who swept off by the momentary thrills are in full chase of the
western glitter. As the transition hasn't come full circle, idiosyncrasies
surface quite often and land them into ludicrous situations.
The
following published in the BEAT and OFF BEAT columns of the Times of India,
illustrates the stage of degeneracy reached. To heighten the hilarity, I
borrowed, O. Henry's pen for a while. See whether it suits the context, or does
justice to my selection.
